The Focusrite ISA Two follows the lineage of ISA preamps, themselves inspired by the designs found on the historic Forte console and studio consoles of that era. The goal remains the same: to offer a preamp with a musical character, featuring a large dynamic range and detailed reproduction, while maintaining modern rack ergonomics. Within the range, the ISA Two stands out with its "duo" approach: two high-end mono channels combined in a 1U format, designed for stereo recordings and sessions where coherence between two sources (or two microphones) is crucial.
If you only need a pair of mic preamps, the ISA Two clearly targets the top tier: capturing vocals with dual mics, stereo piano, overheads, AB/XY pairs, room mics, acoustic guitar, or recording synths and drum machines via its line inputs. The high-impedance front panel instrument inputs also facilitate direct recording of bass or guitar without an external DI, with appropriate level and impedance.
Each channel remains completely independent, allowing you to process two different sources with dedicated settings (gain, impedance, filter, phase inversion, insert), making the ISA Two equally relevant for "live" recording as well as production, when a clean, stable capture that's easy to integrate into a mix is desired.
Like other models in the series, the ISA Two features a pair of Lundahl LL1538 input transformers, renowned for their musical behavior and ability to preserve detail while maintaining a sense of texture. The addition of a four-position impedance selector allows you to match the input load to the microphone used, channel by channel. In practice, this can refine attack, presence, and treble perception, while helping certain microphones "breathe" more naturally depending on the recorded source.
Each side has a send/return insert point very useful for placing processing between the preamp (or DI) and the output: compressor during tracking, gentle corrective EQ, gate on a dynamic take, or safety limiter. This is a real plus for a coherent analog recording chain, especially when you want to control dynamics during recording without multiplying complicated external solutions.
The ISA Two offers a high-pass filter (HPF) to manage vibrations, rumble, mic stand or room noise, and a filter potentiometer with a wide range (16 Hz to 420 Hz) to finely adjust the cleanup zone depending on the source. Add to this phase inversion and 48 V phantom power, and you get a complete recording tool ready to handle real studio situations (multi-mic setups, phase issues, bass-heavy sources, etc.).
