Layered Sapele

Layered sapele, used for Taylor?s backs and sides, consists of three layers of climate-resistant wood with a poplar core and a sapele veneer outer layer. While not as tonally complex as its solid wood counterpart, layered sapele is a sturdy and stable wood that ensures vibrant tone and long-term durability.

Tropical Mahogany

Mahogany is known for its character in the meaty midrange, with a strong fundamental often described as "punchy," "woody," or "dry," as it doesn?t produce many overtones. The earthy voice of mahogany has been featured on many roots music recordings over the years. Mahogany is a good reference wood for tonal discussions, as many other wood tones can be described relative to it. Its essential sound profile is well represented in the mid frequencies.
Acoustic guitars generally tend to live in the midrange of the sound spectrum, but mahogany in particular displays a lot of character in the mids. This thick, present midrange sound is sometimes described in guitar circles as meaty, organic, or even bitey; whenever a player attacks the neck, they touch the core harmonic content of what a guitar produces. These strong mid frequencies produce harmonics that stack and bloom, giving the sound extra thickness.
When hearing the resulting harmonics, you?ll notice the sound is very rich in mid frequencies. As a popular tonewood for many decades, mahogany has been used on numerous old-school acoustic recordings, and this sonic heritage is found across various roots music styles, from blues to folk to slack key.
