I composed this Sonata for solo violin Op.16, between October 2021 and May 2022, for three violinists whom I admire and who are very important to me. The first movement, dedicated to Jacques Ghestem, is inspired by a sensation of freedom and a spontaneous breath that I felt while playing Elliott Carter's Rhapsodie Musings, from the Four Lauds for solo violin. Jacques Ghestem, who devoted his life to promoting contemporary music, notably conveyed to me since I was ten years old (through long discussions, but also through his teaching) his vision of music and his taste for the music of our time, while sharing with me his inner world filled with memories and musical creation. It was therefore quite natural to compose this first movement for him, whose harmonic and instrumental specificities were imagined for its dedicatee. The second movement is composed for David Grimal, a violinist I have always admired since my childhood. His originality, freedom, and fiery interpretations on stage continued to move and inspire me when I participated as a violinist in his orchestra Les Dissonances. It was during his performance of L'Aurore, from Ysaye's fifth Sonata for solo violin, which he gave at the Philharmonie de Paris in January 2022, that I had the idea to compose this slow, suspended, and rhapsodic movement for him. The finale is dedicated to the violinist Sarah Nemtanu, whom I met for the first time in September 2021 at Radio France, where she was recording my Divertimento Op.15 with three of her colleagues from the Orchestre National de France. This striking one-day meeting, both musical and human, was a true light on that September day, an exchange of a vision of life and music, where I reached out to her through my writing, while she reached out to me with her interpretation. A symbol for me of friendship and esteem, my Sonata for solo violin was inspired throughout its composition by these three benevolent and enlightening dedicatees, who guided my path and brought light into my life as a performing artist and composer.
