Description

Breitkopf Urtext according to the Brahms Complete Edition of the ?Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde? in Vienna EB 8685 with cadenzas by Joseph Joachim and Thomas Zehetmair Johannes Brahms composed the present work in the summer months of 1878 in Pörtschach am Wörthersee – originally in a four-movement structure, before he wrote self-ironically to his friend Joseph Joachim: ?The middle movements have fallen – of course, they were the best! But I will let a poor Adagio be added.? The premiere took place on New Year's Day 1879 at the Leipzig Gewandhaus under the direction of the composer with Joachim as soloist. The first edition appeared in the same year.
