Kaptara? Seven letters that contain this "mystery of the distant" that I have so often sought in my music.
It is the name given to the Minoan civilization in the writings of Mari, the ancient Syro-Mesopotamian city. The Cretan civilization is often identified as the source of the Atlantis myth: Kaptara is therefore the possible name of this island, this submerged Eden, of which I have dreamed so much.
My piece opens with an introduction in the Indian Shrî mode (transposed several times) as if opening a door to an "elsewhere." It leads to a first dance that gradually comes to life. A slower, more lyrical central section unfolds a new, very vocal theme. Finally, a second, virtuosic dance concludes the piece in a rhythmic trance that reprises the motif of the introduction. Kaptara is a piece for solo flute, commissioned by the Maxence Larrieu International Competition, 2024.
