L'adattamento delle melodie di Franz Schubert da parte di Romberg per Lilac Time (1921) lo avviò sulla strada della grandezza. Successivamente scrisse le sue operette più famose, The Student Prince (1924), The Desert Song (1926) e The New Moon (1928), che erano in uno stile simile alle operette viennesi di Franz Lehár. Scrisse anche Rosalie (1928) insieme a George Gershwin. Le sue opere successive, come Up in Central Park (1945), sono più vicine allo stile del musical americano, ma ebbero meno successo.
