A adaptação de melodias de Romberg por Franz Schubert para Lilac Time (1921) o colocou no caminho para a grandeza. Posteriormente, ele escreveu suas operetas mais conhecidas, The Student Prince (1924), The Desert Song (1926) e The New Moon (1928), que tinham um estilo semelhante às operetas vienenses de Franz Lehar. Ele também escreveu Rosalie (1928) juntamente com George Gershwin. Suas obras posteriores, como Up in Central Park (1945), são mais próximas do estilo do musical americano, mas foram menos bem-sucedidas.
