Urtext edition, paperback binding

chord part with or without fingering indications

Besides the Quartet with piano op. 13 and the Violin Sonata op. 18, the Cello Sonata op. 6 is among the most accomplished chamber works of Strauss's early work. The influences of Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms are felt, but nevertheless leave enough room for a very specific sound language often comprising surprising rhythmic and melodic turns. The first version established in the spring of 1881 was subjected by Strauss to an in-depth revision during the winter of 1882/83: the initial movement was fundamentally reworked and the two following movements were entirely new.
It was apparently worth it, because after the first performance in Dresden the composer wrote to his mother: "My Sonata was extraordinarily popular, it received colossal applause, I was congratulated on all sides."
