« If artists so rarely account for their moments of inspiration, the reason is quite simple: it is that at those moments in the creative process they are not present at all through consciousness. They cannot psychologically spy on themselves during the creation itself any more than they can, over their shoulder, watch themselves write. » Egon Schiele « Artists: Sometimes the best way to address a problem in your work is to go in the cage with it and let it devour you. » Jerry Saltz These two maxims perfectly describe what I can feel when writing about my latest piano work Dans les abysses de lumière. Composed alongside my Sonata for solo violin, my piano work Dans les abysses de lumière op.17 (2021-2022) is an important return to roots, as has been every return to composing a piano work (Preludes op.1 in 2014-2015, then the Poem, op.5 in 2016, the Quasi Variazioni op.7 in 2018). The feeling of renewal when writing for solo piano intimately comes from my childhood, when the piano entered my life at the age of five. Each piano work I have written marks a turning point in my relationship to composition, a newly reached stage. With this op.17, it is a more distanced and open gaze that I have cast on structure, language, the relationship to time and dissonance. For a year, without time constraints, I periodically returned to composing this piece, sometimes not touching it for entire weeks. I then perceived landscapes, colors, moments of life that echoed each other. Then, the obsession returned and I composed an entire section in one go. The piece "in the process of composition" lived alongside me.
