In his Fantasy Ballade for pedal harp, the author's only known work for the solo Erard harp, La Tombelle does not borrow its main theme directly from a specific traditional song, but plays on us the artifice of writing music in the spirit of ancient ballads. The sense of ballad to favor in this score is that of the vision given by the nineteenth century with a rather free form (which is accentuated by the term "fantasy") and sometimes melancholy accents. Although the main melody of this piece is made up of three musical phrases, like the number of stanzas of certain medieval ballads, a recurring sending is missing here which could demonstrate an explicit homage to the poetic form prized by Machaut or Villon.
This edition is based on an undated autograph draft, saved from its slow but certain destruction in a dark attic, home of colombidae more fond of cooing than music, to be placed in the archives of the diocese of Périgueux and Sarlat. The manuscript, despite the clear writing of La Tombelle, has a number of repentances as well as indications on the functioning of the pedal harp. Some oversights have been corrected as well as some clarifications concerning the changes of pedals. Concerning the two glissandos in the piece (bars 92 and 151), the composer noted the “homophone sounds” under the staff. The first therefore corresponds to a diminished seventh (la-si # -do-ré # -mi b-fa # -sol b) and the second ending the work, on a pentatonic scale (sol-la-si-do b- re-mi-fa b).
