Description

It was in 1825 that a French luthier, Denis Buffet-Auger, set up his workshop in the heart of Paris. He quickly became known in the musical world for making excellent 13-key clarinets. At that time, clarinet manufacturing was entirely manual and required exceptional experience and dexterity. In 1830, Jean-Louis Buffet, son of Denis, took over the business. He married Zoé Crampon in 1836 and created the famous BUFFET CRAMPON brand. The logo in its current form appeared in 1844. His uncle Louis-Auguste Buffet met clarinetist Hyacinthe Klosé, a virtuoso musician and professor at the Paris Conservatory. The two men, the technician and the artist, worked together and adapted to the clarinet the principle of movable rings that the German Theobald Boehm had imagined for the flute. Exhibited in 1839 and patented in 1843 for the clarinet and oboe, this new system quickly became successful. To meet demand, BUFFET CRAMPON set up its workshops in 1850 in Mantes-la-Ville (Yvelines). The range also expanded to oboes and bassoons. From 1866, BUFFET CRAMPON manufactured its first saxophones, 20 years after the invention by the Belgian Adolphe Sax. Many awards were given to BUFFET CRAMPON for the quality of its instruments, especially in 1889 at the Paris Universal Exposition at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. BUFFET CRAMPON became the exclusive and official supplier of the Paris Conservatory, the Lamoureux Concerts, the famous Toscanini Orchestra in New York, while soloists from the Paris Opera or the Opéra Comique preferred it. In 1918, BUFFET CRAMPON benefited from the expansion of the American market and strengthened its position as a leader in the professional clarinet world. In 1921, a young apprentice, Robert Carrée, was hired by the company. A talented acoustician, he created the R13 clarinets in 1950 and RC in 1975, which later gave rise to the Festival and Prestige models. The workshops modernized over time and adopted more modern technology, without moving away from the original finishing quality. In 1981, BUFFET CRAMPON was bought by the famous London-based music publishing group Boosey & Hawkes, whose origins date back to 1760. Innovation has always been at the heart of the manufacture. Thus, in 1994, a new range called Green Line was born. This revolutionary material, made of 95% ebony powder and 5% carbon fibers, eliminates the risk of cracking while presenting acoustic qualities identical to those of wood. Today, the Green Line range is globally recognized by the greatest professionals of the clarinet and oboe. In 2003, Boosey & Hawkes separated from the flagship of the French wind instrument manufacture in favor of The Music Group, and it was in 2005 that BUFFET CRAMPON regained its independence on the initiative of its President Paul Baronnat, an active player in supporting artists and preserving the brand. BUFFET CRAMPON acquired in 2006 two famous brass brands: Antoine Courtois Paris and Besson. Since its creation, BUFFET CRAMPON has ranked first among clarinet manufacturers, thanks to unmatched expertise and a permanent capacity for innovation, which also benefits other instruments of the brand such as oboes, bassoons, and saxophones. Tradition and a strong entrepreneurial spirit have been more than ever at the heart of BUFFET CRAMPON's dynamic since 1825.
