In 1956, Martin Cohen, a young mechanical engineer from the Bronx, passed the famous jazz club Birdland in New York. He enters and finds himself immediately captivated by the sound and energy of Latin Jazz. Martin was so touched by this music that he wanted to have his own bongos. Unfortunately, because of trade embargoes, high-quality Cuban bongos could not be found in the United States. So Martin decided to use his engineering skills to make them himself. In 1964, Martin Cohen founded Latin Percussion and offered musicians his bongos, bells and other instruments, delivered in brown paper bags. Martin used this close bond he had with artists on the Latin scene. This greatly contributed to the success of the brand.
