This 7-minute piece for 12 voices is part of the program "Bach + 5," conceived by Catherine Simonpietri and commissioned by the ensemble Sequenza 9.3. This program centers around the chorales on Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland by J.S. Bach, using the text of Ambrose of Milan's hymn, in Luther's German translation (that is, the text treated by Bach). While the ordering of this text initially seems respected, with the score indeed beginning with the 1st stanza of the chorale, in an archaizing harmonization of the traditional melody, it is the 7th stanza that directly follows, imposing a new direction on the discourse. The second line of this stanza gives us the key to the title: Die Nacht gibt ein neu Licht dar (The night gives a new light): we are plunged into the night of the Nativity. After a contemplative episode, the polyphony is driven into a crescendo culminating on the last stanza, a true explosion of joy and praise.
