Description
The piece consists of six "booklets," each booklet made up of two sheets: original and mirror. The soloist can determine the order of the booklets themselves, even the order of the groups noted on the sheets is left to them (with certain restrictions). In this piece, Boulez employs the mirror technique of the variation form. The virtuosic demands are very high; the short-phrased pieces are like stenograms of a linearly expanded complexity, a polyphony extremely condensed in dynamic accentuation.
