The "xmax" follows the line of high-end bus processors designed for mixing and mastering. Its Class A topology and Mid/Side processing allow it to consolidate the mono foundation while sculpting the stereo space with great finesse. It thus becomes the central link in a summing chain, whether on an ITB mix or around a console.
Whether you are a mix engineer, mastering engineer, or touring sound engineer, the "xmax" provides control and musicality. On a stereo bus, it glues the mix without crushing it; in mastering, it refines dynamics band by band; live, it secures the head of the chain while maintaining punch and clarity and controlling transients.
The multiband compression section segments the signal into bass, mid, and side components. The adjustable crossover frequency between bass and mid allows optimizing the main energy zone, while a global Release ensures coherent movement between bands. The VariLink function links the behavior of the bands for quick and musical decisions.
The Soft Clipper inherits the aesthetic of the "Alpha" compressor: it pushes perceived level without clipping external A/D converters. Separate analog indicators display level, gain reduction, and clipping per band, offering immediate visual feedback. The "Punch" mode enhances rhythmic impact, Lowmo centers the low end in mono, and the "Tone" control acts as a shelving EQ to quickly balance the overall tonality.
