The Focusrite RedNet R1 is part of the Red and RedNet ecosystem as a monitoring controller and remote control designed to harness the full potential of Dante in professional environments. Whereas a "classic" monitoring controller often limits itself to a few physical inputs/outputs, the R1 stands out with a network routing approach: it can manage output groups and switch between multiple sources and destinations available on your Red interfaces, as well as within a broader Dante network.
This philosophy makes it a particularly coherent tool in multi-room studios, shared control rooms, post-production suites, and installations where multiple platforms must coexist. The R1 then becomes a single control point to switch and "sum" audio between different domains: digital audio workstations (DAWs), analog inputs/outputs, digital streams, and Dante ecosystems.
The RedNet R1 is aimed at sound engineers, mixers, and technicians who want tactile, fast, and reliable control of monitoring without constantly relying on a mouse or software windows. During tracking, it streamlines sessions thanks to talkback, headphone output, and instant cut/attenuation functions. During mixing, it facilitates comparison between monitoring systems and reference levels, with ready-to-recall presets.
In post-production and immersive mixing, its ability to handle surround configurations up to 7.1.4 meets the needs for controlling multiple speakers, checking submixes, and quickly validating multiple listening scenarios. The A/B switch and monitoring presets speed up back-and-forth between speaker pairs, downmixes, or dedicated sets (nearfield, midfield, immersion).
The top panel is dedicated to essential controls: level, selection of reference level preset, Dim, Mute, and several Solo modes adapted to monitoring workflows. The goal is simple: access critical actions in a fraction of a second, with constant visual cues, even during source or configuration changes.
The R1 offers a preset logic particularly useful in versatile control rooms. You can switch between A and B, and use up to four presets to quickly move from one listening setup to another, especially for checking submixes or broadcast variants.
The Dante-compatible talkback section is one of the RedNet R1's strengths: a built-in microphone is available for quick exchanges, and an internal microphone preamp allows connection of an external mic via the XLR input. For headphone sessions, the headphone output facilitates I/O monitoring and interaction with artists.
Up to four talkback destination groups are available when used with a Red interface. In environments with other Dante devices, one talkback group is available, which is sufficient for many studio configurations.
Two LCD screens display precise level metering for outputs, sources, and headphone output. They also serve as visual guides for menu navigation, a real advantage when quickly reconfiguring a session, even in a dark control room or under stress.
The RedNet Control software allows preparation of monitoring and routing setups, both simple and complex, then recalling them consistently at the controller level. To complete the ergonomics, a 6.35 mm jack input accepts a footswitch: practical for managing talkback, LFE Mute, and other functions without leaving the workstation.
In a network installation, every cable counts. The RedNet R1 can be powered via Ethernet using PoE to reduce cabling complexity, or via the supplied external power supply. This flexibility facilitates integration on a desk, in a rack, or in a control room where a clean and quick-to-maintain setup is desired.
