The Citadel Overtuber follows in the footsteps of overdrives inspired by the legendary BK Butler Tube Driver, a classic that appeared in the early 1980s and became a reference for its "amp-like" saturation, rich in harmonics and ultra-sensitive to playing dynamics.
This lineage is reflected in the approach: a warm, expressive drive that respects right-hand dynamics and transforms a somewhat tame clean tone into a "living" sound. For guitarists who enjoy textures like David Gilmour, Eric Johnson, Billy Gibbons, or Joe Satriani, this pedal clearly belongs to the right sonic family.
Within the Citadel Electronics range (brand launched in 2025), the Overtuber targets the sweet spot of low to mid gain, with an independent boost to cover more ground without stacking pedals.
The Overtuber is aimed both at discerning guitarists who want a boutique overdrive pedal that's easy to dial in, and at those looking for a first "real" pedal capable of bringing out the character of their guitar and amp.
It shines in blues (sensitive breakup and natural sustain), hard rock (dense riffs, singing solos), and 80s vintage metal (sharper attack and tighter lows thanks to the Body and Girth controls). It also works very well to add true "tube" dimension to a transistor amp or a digital setup, and to push a tube amp already on the edge of saturation.
In the studio, it fits easily into a mix thanks to its thickness and midrange controls. Live, its Boost mode lets you cut through the band without changing your entire sound.
The control panel goes beyond a simple Gain/Tone/Volume trio: Gain sets the saturation level, Level adjusts output volume, Tone refines brightness, while Body and Girth sculpt density and the sense of "body" in the low mids and bass, very useful for adapting the pedal to different guitars, pickups, and amps.
Two footswitches facilitate stage use: one to activate the effect, and one for the Boost (high voltage mode), to gain headroom, openness, and pick response.
For pedalboard integration, it features a relay-based true bypass with a soft click footswitch for smoother switching, as well as an "Initial State" switch allowing you to set the pedal's state at power-up (very handy with power supplies with master switches and loopers/switchers).
The Citadel Overtuber delivers a warm and three-dimensional overdrive with an "amp-like" feel: the sound thickens when attacked, then cleans up when lowering the guitar volume. It remains nuanced for expressive rhythms while offering natural sustain for fluid leads.
The Body and Girth controls are particularly effective for adjusting the low end: tightening the bass for precise riffs, or adding roundness for a fatter blues tone. When engaging the high voltage Boost, the attack gains presence and the dynamics open up, helping achieve a bigger lead sound without necessarily increasing gain.
