The Essentials to Know About Heritage Audio 73 DI Active Direct Boxes (73 DI ONE and 73 DI 2)
- The "73" Tone Live: an active D.I. designed to recapture the liveliness, warmth, and harmonic density of a vintage 73-style preamp.
- Very High Impedance Input thanks to a discrete Class A JFET input stage, ideal for preserving the attack and dynamics of instruments.
- Custom Output Transformers: isolation, noise rejection, and solid low end, with a studio-typical musical signature.
- Built for Stage and Studio: -15 dB pad, ground lift, gold-plated connectors, and ultra-robust chassis.
A D.I. Born from an Obsession with the "73" Sound: 15 Years of Development, Over 50 Years of Heritage
At Heritage Audio, the "73" topology is not just an aesthetic nod: it's a sonic approach based on a Class A output stage with transformer, renowned for its punchy feel, full mid-lows, and very musical handling of transients. The
73 DI series translates this philosophy into an active direct box designed to become your best instrument input point, both in recording and live settings.
The challenge was twofold: achieve a
very high input impedance while remaining
compatible with +48 V phantom power. Heritage Audio adapted the transistor topology by replacing the first transistor of the "73" stage with a
JFET J109, reaching an input impedance of
2.2 megaohms (instead of 47 kiloohms in the original schematic). The result: the instrument "breathes," the signal stays open, and the playing feel is preserved.
For Whom and For What Uses: From Vintage Bass to Modern Synths
An active D.I. is often the best choice for passive electronics instruments, and the
Heritage Audio 73 DI series is particularly inspiring on
passive guitars and
basses. It delivers a livelier top end, tighter lows, and that touch of saturation in the low mids that helps the instrument "sit" naturally in a mix.
But its
high headroom also allows it to excel with hotter sources:
keyboards,
synths,
drum machines,
samplers, or any setup where you need to feed a console, audio interface, or PA system directly. For a Rhodes, a Wurlitzer, or rich synth textures, the 73 DI adds body and a sense of depth reminiscent of passing through a true analog front-end.
Features That Make the Difference: Transformer, Class A, and Level Control
A Discrete Class A Input Stage Designed for Dynamics
At the heart of the 73 DI is a
discrete Class A input stage based on JFET, designed to preserve attack without harshness and to handle playing nuances (slap, palm-mute, pick attacks, percussive keyboards) with great stability. This approach aims for a "ready-to-mix" direct sound: rich, solid, and musical, without needing to push the EQ.
A "73-DI" Output Transformer: Isolation and Character
The output relies on a
Heritage Audio "73-DI" low-impedance output transformer, developed to provide both
isolation (very useful against ground loops),
noise rejection, and a harmonic signature inspired by the classics. The power supply is designed to remain fully compatible with +48 V phantom power while maintaining a transistor output and transformer architecture to preserve the behavior and feel of a true studio circuit.
-15 dB Pad, Ground Lift, THRU: A Truly Versatile D.I.
The
-15 dB pad manages high-level instruments and also opens the door to bolder uses, such as capturing certain
amplifier output signals (depending on conditions and level). The
ground lift complements the transformer's work to eliminate hum in stage environments. Finally, the
THRU parallel output facilitates simultaneous routing to an amp and the recording chain.
Regarding reliability, the extruded aluminum enclosure protects the electronics, while the connections are
recessed to minimize handling errors. Components and construction (MIL-spec PCB, full ground plane, thick steel chassis) are designed for intensive use, both in studio and on tour.
