We know the extraordinary circumstances of the composition and creation of the Quartet for the end of Messiaen's Time, in Stalag VIII A prison camp in Görlitz, formerly German city of Silesia, today divided by the river Oder between German Görlitz and Zgorzelec, Polish. One can imagine the Silesian winter, cold and dark, the snow, the sinister barracks, the despair, the waiting ... Icy colors, dark sounds - progressively they are transformed - appear sketches of musical ideas - their development repeatedly collapses, returns the heavy and icy atmosphere ... Some piano arrangements with "contracted resonances" would have said Messiaen - in fact "spectral" chords come back as a leitmotiv; they too will be transformed along the room and finally ...
