Order from the German-Canadian duo Amadeus Guitar Duo,
Concertomaggio is a triple "omaggio" to Ravel, Sor, and the Argentine Astor Piazzolla. While certain characteristic elements of the writing of these three composers remain very "readable" in each of the movements that pay tribute to them, it is notable that the second of these movements, while quoting one of Fernando Sor's most famous studies, is enriched, in counterpoint, with excerpts from the German and Canadian anthems, respective nods to the dedicatees of the work. Thus, the second movement opens with the first measures of the Adagio from Haydn's
Kaiserquartett, which soon fades away in favor of the last notes of the sumptuous
O Canada by Calixa Lavallée, finally allowing the guitar and its Catalan praises to enter. Belonging to no other school than that of emotion and shared pleasure and always in search of that ideal balance between the orchestra and the guitars, the unclassifiable
Concertomaggio—very classical but so contemporary at the same time—might, after all, resemble a brief and happy journey through space and time, quite simply?
