I just received this pedal from TC, which I had been eyeing for some time, as it perfectly matched what I was looking for: multi-effects simulation to insert into the effects loop of my Marshall DSL20 amp, a brand I know well. I owned most of their pedals in single format before moving to the G-System (which is exceptional but very complicated to program and a bit too bulky). The ergonomics are well thought out, a bit tedious for a beginner, but nothing is ever perfect, too bad the manual is not up to par!!! The Plethora X5 offers a multitude of modulation effects, Delay, reverb, Pitch, …….. Customizable effects loop insert for external pedals, built-in tuner • Hall Of Fame 2 Reverb • Flashback 2 Delay • Looper • Sub n Up Octaver • Brainwaves Pitch Shifter • Corona Chorus • Hypergravity Compressor • Mimiq Doubler • Vortex Flanger • Pipeline Tap Tremolo • Quintessence Harmony • Sentry Noise Gate • Shaker Vibrato • Delay Alter Ego. Everything needed is there to obtain a wide range of sounds, from ambient to hard rock (provided you add overdrives and saturations, Fuzz or others in the internal loop of the device or at the amp input). At first, after many tests on different amps, I almost returned the item; the sound in the effects loop of my tube amp was muffled and not natural at all. I had even repackaged it, then after some thought overnight, I took out the multi and watched videos on output settings (Cab sim, volumes). What gave me a distorted sound was the cab simulation which was activated by default (certainly useful for output to a PA or sound card, but when using a tube amp, it must be disabled) and then it becomes clean. A tip before giving a bad review: you have to persevere to get the best out of it, it is not plug and play like a classic multi-effects. TC Electronic has just been acquired by Behringer but continues to offer updates, the latest dating from January 2022, with new effects added and some bug fixes. Some effects and improvements are still missing, such as being able to activate the cab simulation on only one voice to share the stereo signal between a PA and an amp. Users also request a Disto, an EQ, and a Boost! The brand listens to users and will certainly offer other evolutions, which bodes well for the future of this pedal which, for less than €400, remains a very good deal by offering many quality effects in a compact pedalboard (30 x 12 x 5), at a price lower than the competition. Perfect for delay, modulation, and reverb effects. You always want more (overdrive, fuzz), maybe that will come in future updates. Be careful though, the effects are not adjustable "on the fly", except by using the mash function (foot pressing the switch). So it's more for storing effects for a given song or style than for tweaking live with the buttons (which are only used in edit mode).
