Description

In 1849, Schumann gifted chamber music works for three wind instruments: the clarinet with the "Three Fantasy Pieces" op. 73, the horn with the "Adagio and Allegro" op. 70, as well as the oboe with the famous "Three Romances" op. 94 presented here. The first romance adopts the pleasant tone of a ballad in A minor. The second, in A major, resembles a song without words. With its call motifs and piano arpeggios, the finale evokes the then very popular poems from Northern Europe. Composed in December 1849, these romances were offered by Schumann to his wife Clara as a Christmas gift. This manuscript has not survived, but we were able to rely on handwritten sketches for the preparation of the urtext edition. This corrects some errors from the first 1851 edition. The preface and editor's notes provide further information regarding the sources and issues related to the score.
