Description

Joseph Haydn
Piano Sonata in E flat major Hob. XVI: 52

Georg Feder (Editor)

András Schiff (Fingering)

Silke Schloen (Preface, Critical Commentary)

The Great Sonata in E flat major enjoys particular popularity among Haydn's piano sonatas. It was composed during the year 1794, during Haydn's second stay in London, where he discovered the new English pianoforte, fuller sounding, fitted with pedals and having a larger range. It is possible that these new sonic possibilities inspired the composer to play the full piano in the first two movements. We were able to count for the fingerings of this leading work in an Urtext edition on András Schiff - closely linked to Editions G. Henle through his participation in numerous projects on Bach and Mozart.
