BLEASS Phase Mutant is an effect plugin designed to deeply transform a track through FM-based distortion. It is suitable for both modern mixing (adding bite, thickening a sound, enhancing presence) and sound design (metallic textures, "synthetic" timbres, complex harmonic movements). Thanks to pitch-tracking, you can achieve more tonal and controlled saturations on melodic sources while remaining powerful on percussive elements to create character and impact.
The core of Phase Mutant is based on frequency modulation distortion: instead of simply crushing the signal like classic saturation, the plugin generates complex harmonic structures that can resemble FM synthesis timbres, digital textures, or very dense overtones. You can modulate the audio from the input, an internal oscillator, or via self-modulation to push the effect towards more experimental results.
The pitch-tracking oscillator analyzes the pitch of the source in real time. By adjusting the frequency ratio, you shape expressive tonal variations that remain coherent on a bassline, a voice, or a monophonic instrument. The result: a more musical distortion, ideal for reinforcing a lead without losing the note's identity, or for giving a harmonic signature to a vocal take.
The waveform control allows smooth transitions between sine, triangle, sawtooth, and square waves. This morphing opens a wide palette, from soft and round harmonics to sharper attacks. The phase offset adds a stereo dimension useful for widening a sound or creating subtle spatial movement, particularly effective on pads, ambiances, synth buses, or effects.
To avoid a static sound, Phase Mutant integrates several modulation sources: two LFOs for slow or fast cycles, an envelope follower to react to input level (perfect on drums and vocals), and a rhythmic step sequencer to synchronize variations to the tempo. These tools transform simple distortion into a dynamic effect capable of creating pulses, harmonic sweeps, and impactful transitions without complex automation.
