FabFilter Pro-C 2 is a versatile compressor designed to sculpt dynamics precisely while maintaining natural musicality. It is used equally for stabilizing a vocal, tightening a bass, controlling a snare drum, gluing a drum bus, or creating an EDM-style pumping effect. Its visual approach and tailored modes make it a central tool for both mixing and mastering, whether in a home studio or professional production.
Pro-C 2 offers eight styles, each optimized for a specific use (for example "Vocal," "Mastering," "Bus," "Punch," "Pumping"). The program-dependent attack and release curves adapt to the content to achieve compression that is more transparent, more controlled, or more aggressive depending on your goal. The intelligent automatic gain helps compare your settings at a constant perceived level to judge the result without bias.
The Range parameter limits the maximum gain reduction: ideal for maintaining credible dynamics while adding firmness. The Mix control from 0 to 200% allows classic parallel compression, but also stronger dosages when you seek impact, sustain, or a more pronounced effect.
The external side-chain allows triggering compression from another track (kick on bass, vocal on reverb, etc.). The Mid/Side processing helps manage the center and sides separately, useful for stabilizing a vocal in the center while letting the stereo ambiance breathe. The integrated side-chain EQ section provides dedicated high-pass and low-pass filters, plus an additional free filter for surgical triggering.
The interface highlights the "when" and "why" of compression: levels, knee, gain reduction, peak indicators, and loudness measurements compliant with EBU R128 and ITU-R 1770 (momentary mode). The look-ahead, activatable up to 20 ms, secures fast transients, and up to 4x oversampling reduces artifacts. For latency-sensitive situations, look-ahead can be disabled.
