The Moogerfooger MF-101S Lowpass Filter is a "lowpass" filtering effect designed to sculpt timbre with a Moog-typical analog signature. It is used both in mixing (cleaning, softening, focusing a track) and in sound design (expressive cutoff sweeps, musical resonance, dynamic variations). Its envelope follower enables "auto-wah" filter effects and dynamic responses that follow playing intensity or signal level, making it a natural ally for guitars, basses, synths, drum machines, and even creative buses.
The core of the effect relies on a 4-pole cascade filter in the Moog tradition, renowned for its warmth, smoothness in the high frequencies, and its ability to become highly expressive when resonance is increased. This type of filter is not just technically "correct": it is above all playable, with a response that highlights sources and enhances the sense of movement.
Thanks to the envelope follower, the filter can move automatically according to the input level. The result: dynamic and organic effects, perfect for funk grooves, talking bass lines, breathing synth leads, or percussion that gains depth. In production, this often avoids the need for extensive automation: playing (or signal dynamics) becomes a modulation source in its own right.
In the studio, multiple processing layers are often stacked on different tracks. The virtual CV connections facilitate full control and modulation of different effect instances within a project, enabling creative interactions: making one filter "respond" to another, synchronizing movements, or creating coherent variations across tracks. This approach is ideal for building textures, transitions, and dynamic build-ups while maintaining sonic coherence.
