Waves API Collection is a plugin suite dedicated to timbre shaping and dynamic control with the API sonic aesthetic, renowned for its musicality and transparency. It is aimed at producers, mixers, and mastering engineers who want to sculpt a vocal, add impact to drums, solidify a bus, clarify a dense arrangement, or add character without losing definition. Whether you work in hip hop, pop, rock, electronic, or film music, this collection targets a "record-ready" result: more punch, better clarity, and controlled energy.
At the heart of the collection, the API 2500 is an essential bus compressor to glue a mix, thicken a drum bus, or stabilize mastering with control. Its specialty is offering two compression topologies: "Feed Back" for a softer, more vintage feel, like a leveling amp, and "Feed Forward" for a sharper attack and modern response. This dual personality allows switching from discreet compression to more aggressive compression depending on style and intention.
Thrust is the signature option of the API 2500 to maintain bass energy while controlling dynamics more effectively, especially on kicks, basses, and rhythmic buses. The result is a stronger low end, less prone to pumping, and a cleanly compressed high end to gain presence. This approach is highly appreciated in hip hop and club music when you want level and weight without crushing the groove.
The API 550A and API 550B share the same sonic DNA but address slightly different needs. The 550A is designed as a versatile equalizer, ideal for quickly shaping a source and adding character. The 550B is more precision-oriented and problem-solving, useful for targeting a problematic area, refining a resonance, or adjusting presence without altering the signal.
The key point of these EQs is the proportional-Q curve: the more you boost (or cut), the narrower the band becomes, which helps stay musical while gaining effectiveness. This provides clarity with minimal coloration while preserving the natural feel that made API consoles and modules famous.
The API 560 combines the ergonomics of a graphic equalizer with the proportional-Q approach for clean and coherent corrections and global curves. It's the ideal tool for speed: digging out a muddy area, opening up air, enhancing attack, or fitting a source precisely in the mix. Its interface encourages instinctive equalization, very effective in the studio as well as for live needs.
To speed up decision-making, the collection includes presets designed by renowned producers, mixers, and mastering engineers, including Steve Lillywhite, Tony Maserati, Greg Wells, and Drew Lavyne. You can also activate, if desired, a subtle harmonic distortion and noise inspired by the original hardware, to add a light analog patina, useful for bringing life to overly clean takes or fully in-the-box productions.
