Waves Bass Slapper is a virtual instrument dedicated to slap bass, designed to recreate both the percussive thumb attack (thumbing) and the energy of popping with a precision difficult to achieve through classic samples. It targets producers and composers who want an immediately credible bass for styles like funk, disco, pop, R&B, and groove-based music, while maintaining a "player-like" feel on the MIDI keyboard.
Whether you're looking for a warm and vintage slap or a bright and modern one, you can shape the instrument's timbre and behavior to fit into a dense mix, support a rhythm section, or take the lead in a hook.
The core of Bass Slapper relies on a large multisample library played organically, with natural sustain (no looping) and round-robin assignments to reduce the "machine-gun" effect on repeated notes. You benefit from a complete 5-string articulation set (thumbing, popping, mutes, and other nuances) to program lively lines, from subtle ghost notes to aggressive slap parts.
Managing 11 playing positions adds an essential dimension to realism: the same note sounds different depending on where it is played on the neck. By choosing the position and letting the instrument perform automatic string switching, you get more natural transitions and a more coherent timbral placement, just like on a real bass.
To adapt the instrument to your playing (or programming) style, Bass Slapper offers 5 legato modes, including options like "always" and "off." Velocity response is customizable via MIDI parameters (for example, velocity curve and depth), and you can control dynamics by selecting the number of velocity layers used. The result: a slap that can stay clean and round or become sharp and edgy without losing the instrument feel.
To quickly go from a "DI" take to a mix-ready bass, Bass Slapper includes a complete processing chain. Before the amp, you have effects like compressor, phaser, overdrive, triggered wah, and chorus to accentuate funk, thicken the attack, or color the groove. On the amplification side, the 4 amp and cabinet simulation options let you choose a bass that purrs, growls, or cuts through the mix depending on the style.
After the amp, you find delay (with tempo sync) and reverb to place the instrument in space, from dry and close slap to a wider sound. Finally, detailed settings like sustain, transposition, and release artifacts (note release) help refine realism, feel, and cleanliness according to your production.
Bass Slapper can be used as a plugin in your DAW or as a standalone instrument to play, compose, and sketch ideas quickly. NKS compatibility facilitates integration with NI Maschine and Komplete Kontrol, providing consistent mapping and direct access to essential parameters.
