Waves C4 Multiband Compressor is a multiband dynamics plugin designed to control the energy of a signal by frequency zones, rather than compressing the entire spectrum globally. It is used both to correct issues (unstable lows, harsh highs, intrusive low-mids) and to amplify the impact of a mix, drum bus, vocal, or master. Thanks to its dynamic EQ logic, the C4 delivers a cleaner and more "mix-ready" sound: dynamics are controlled, but musicality and transients remain intact.
The C4 combines in a single tool a palette of treatments: compression, expansion, limiting, and dynamic equalization. The major advantage is the ability to apply different behavior per band: for example, tame an overpowering bass while adding density in the mids, or conversely open up the high frequencies with expansion to gain brightness without harshness.
On drum loops or a drum bus, the C4 facilitates surgical work: limit the kick without squashing the snare, tighten toms via expansion, compress highs to smooth cymbals and hi-hats, or enhance the snare attack with upward expansion. All while maintaining coherent overall control, ideal for giving a more "produced" signature to drums without multiplying plugins.
The C4's adjustment logic highlights the Threshold and Range duo. Whereas many multibands require lengthy settings to frame the dynamic action, Range directly defines the maximum gain variation limit (positive or negative). The result: you lock the amount of intervention, then set the Threshold to decide when the processing acts. This is particularly effective for staying subtle on a bus or master while keeping predictable control.
In addition to dynamics, the C4 functions as a 4-band equalizer with variable band frequencies and adjustable crossover slopes. You can choose wide bands for overall coloration or narrower bands to treat a specific area. And if you bypass the dynamics, you get a focus EQ capable of reshaping the spectrum with finesse, while maintaining a mixing-oriented ergonomics.
To adapt the processing reaction to the groove, the C4 offers different release signatures: a smooth vintage-style release (like some optical compressors), a more reactive release that speeds up as the audio decays, or an Auto-Release to save time when you need to get straight to the result. This choice directly influences the sensation of punch, sustain, and transparency, especially on buses and percussive sources.
Multibands can be known for long setup times. The C4 overcomes this obstacle with over 50 presets designed by professionals (including Dave Pensado, Ross Hogarth, Dave Aron, and Scott Gershin). These presets are useful to quickly identify a sonic direction, then refine bands and dynamics according to your session, style, and goal (correction, density, impact, color).
