Waves CLA Classic Compressors is a compressor suite designed to bring dynamic control, impact, and density to your mixes, with a color inspired by analog machines that have become benchmarks. Whether you're producing pop, rock, hip-hop, electronic, or film music, you have multiple compression "personalities": the smooth and singing wrap for vocals, solid hold for bass, punch and attack for drums, or transient control on guitars and buses.
The suite is especially suited for those who want to quickly achieve a "mix finished" sound without spending hours tweaking complex parameters: you choose the model based on the source, set the gain reduction, then blend the processed signal with the parallel mix control when needed.
The CLA-2A stands out for compression known to wrap vocals with a silky, stable, and natural sound. Its behavior is ideal when you want to smooth a vocal performance while retaining presence, or to add body to bass and guitars without making the attack aggressive. The result is controlled dynamics with a sensation of warmth and fluidity, very effective from the first dB of reduction.
The CLA-3A aims for a more direct and punchy approach, perfect for tracks that need to remain tight and clear in the mix. It excels on snare, toms, bass, rhythm guitars, and percussive sources, combining fast response with musical behavior. When you want punch without crushing the signal, this model becomes an ally to stabilize dynamics while keeping a clean and effective grain.
The two CLA-76 versions are designed to handle transients with lightning-fast speed, making them formidable on drums, room mics, percussion, guitars, and modern vocals. The "Blue" and "Black" versions offer distinct signatures, with differences in gain staging, time constants, and harmonic distortion, allowing you to choose the attitude best suited to the track.
On drums, you can achieve tight and explosive compression, with the option to activate the famous "all-button" mode for more incendiary and rock effects. On vocals or guitars, the suite adds a sense of urgency, density, and character, while maintaining level control via the trim control.
In addition to the "hardware" color and behavior, the suite includes controls designed for today's mixing. The Mix control facilitates parallel compression directly within the plugin: you can preserve the attack of the original signal while adding body and sustain via the compressed signal. The Trim control allows quick output level adjustment, useful for objective before/after comparisons without being influenced by volume differences.
The collection includes numerous presets, including settings associated with Chris Lord-Alge's work on major artist productions, as well as presets offered by recognized producers and engineers. It's an excellent starting point to quickly find a "radio ready" color, then refine according to the vocal, tempo, and arrangement.
