Waves Clavinet is a virtual instrument designed to recreate one of the most iconic keyboards in the history of modern music: the D6 clavinet. Its role is simple and highly effective: to deliver that percussive, edgy, and "biting" sound that transforms a chord progression into a rhythmic riff. In funk productions, it can replace or double the rhythm guitar; in rock and pop, it adds sharp relief that cuts through the mix; in reggae and soul, it enhances the groove with crisp attacks and precise accents.
Thanks to its multi-sampled capture and typical effects, Waves Clavinet suits both chicken-scratch patterns and more melodic lines. It targets keyboardists, beatmakers, and producers who want the character of a vintage keyboard while maintaining the flexibility of a modern workflow (presets, integrated processing, DAW integration).
The core of Waves Clavinet is based on extensive multi-sampling: every playing nuance, articulation, and hammer attack has been recorded to capture the unique blend of snap, twang, and grit. The presence of two essential behaviors, muted and unmuted, allows switching from a tight, controlled sound to a more open and expressive response, just like the original instrument.
Velocity handling is designed to provide a "living" keyboard feel: you can play from ghost notes to sharp wrist strikes, with dynamics that remain coherent in a musical context. The result: parts that groove naturally, and an instrument that responds well to both staccato chords and very fast repetitive patterns.
To speed up setup in a mix, Waves Clavinet includes directly usable processing: EQ, compression, and limiting. The idea is to get a clavinet that sits immediately in the production, with controlled attack, present mids, and stable level, without stacking external plug-ins. These tools are especially useful to make the rhythm stand out in a busy arrangement (drums, bass, guitars, brass, vocals).
The clavinet is often associated with an "instrument + amp" approach, and Waves Clavinet follows this with an amp simulator and a microphone selection to achieve a more organic feel, close to a live recording. This section helps transition from a direct, cutting sound to a thicker, more aggressive, or rounder tone depending on the style.
To recreate the most famous sonic signatures, the plug-in also offers presets inspired by classic sounds, as well as effects frequently used with the clavinet: phase, chorus, and reverb to add depth and movement. The highlight for funk remains the autowah controlled by an envelope follower: the effect follows your playing dynamics and naturally reacts to accents, allowing you to quickly achieve that expressive automatic "wah," ideal for syncopated patterns.
Waves Clavinet can be used within your DAW as a software instrument, but also in stand-alone mode for live playing, rehearsals, or writing sessions. This flexibility is appreciated if you want a clavinet sound immediately accessible from your master keyboard, without heavy setup, while maintaining the same sonic consistency as in production.
