Waves Dugan Speech is an automixer designed for automatic gain management in multi-mic setups typical of roundtables, conferences, corporate events, talk shows, broadcast recordings, and places of worship. Rather than "chasing faders," the plugin dynamically distributes gain according to who is speaking, to improve speech intelligibility and stabilize the mix when multiple speakers take turns or talk over each other. The result: cleaner, more consistent sound and smoother operation, even with a large number of open sources.
Developed in collaboration with audio inventor Dan Dugan, Dugan Speech automates microphone mixing by lowering unused microphones when only one person is speaking. This approach effectively reduces cumulative background noise and helps limit common multi-mic system issues like feedback and added room reverb.
Unlike traditional gating, Dugan Speech performs gradual level changes. Gain changes remain smooth, preserving a natural vocal sound and avoiding abrupt cutoffs at phrase ends, often audible on consonants and breaths.
When several speakers talk simultaneously, the plugin shares gain among active channels. This management maintains overall intelligibility while preventing a constantly open mic from degrading the mix through noise buildup and bleed.
You have a Channel Override mode to prioritize a strategic microphone (host, master of ceremonies, lectern mic). The Recall Safe mode helps secure operation by excluding certain settings from snapshots, useful when you want to maintain automix consistency despite scene recalls.
Dugan Speech offers two modes: Automix On (normal operation) or Off (unity gain inputs). To adapt the automix to the stage reality (mic distance, voice level, wireless, lecterns), you can adjust sensitivities per channel. The interface also includes a gain bar and input level metering for quick visual control in use.
