Waves F6 Floating-Band Dynamic EQ is a "surgical" dynamic equalizer designed to quickly solve issues of resonances, harshness, hardness, or frequency masking while remaining musical. Unlike a static EQ, its corrections adapt to the signal's dynamics: you can attenuate a frequency only when it becomes too prominent (sibilance, nasality, boom, aggressive cymbals), or conversely boost an area only when the instrument needs it. It is particularly effective on vocals, drums, basses, guitars, instrument buses, as well as on stereo mixes and mastering.
The principle of the F6 is simple and powerful: each EQ band can trigger a compression or expansion action based on a defined threshold. The result: your boost/cut is no longer permanent. For example, on a vocal, a correction that suits soft passages can become too pronounced on powerful passages. With F6, the equalization "kicks in" at the right moment, then naturally backs off when the level drops, for maximum transparency.
The 6 floating bands can be freely positioned across the spectrum, can overlap, and be adjusted with a filter bandwidth ranging from very narrow (surgical resonance treatment) to very wide (more global tonal shaping). Each parametric band offers Peak, Low Shelf, or High Shelf responses, allowing you to switch from corrective EQ to more musical sculpting depending on the source.
Each band can operate in stereo, on the Mid (center), or on the Sides. You can brighten centered vocals without making the sides too bright, or boost the lows on the sides without affecting the rhythmic foundation in the center (kick/bass). In mixing as well as mastering, this approach provides formidable precision to balance width and clarity.
F6 allows you to choose, per band, an internal sidechain (reacting to the energy of the signal within the band) or an external sidechain (reacting to another track). This is ideal for intelligent processing, such as making a bass "breathe" only in its low range according to the kick, while leaving the rest of the spectrum intact. The integrated analysis tool helps you visualize the treatment's impact: adjustable display resolution (from 1 to 1/24 octave), pre or post placement, and choice of RMS or Peak display mode for reading adapted to your workflow.
Thanks to zero-latency operation and optimized CPU consumption, Waves F6 Floating-Band Dynamic EQ integrates easily into heavy sessions and can also be used in live conditions. Its interface is designed to stay fast: parametric EQ-type controls on one side, dynamic parameters on the other, with ergonomics compatible with multi-touch screens.
