Waves Key Detector is a plugin designed to speed up a step as simple as it is essential in music production: finding the key of an audio. Whether you are working from a sample, a multi-instrument loop, a vocal track, a live recording, or a full mix, it replaces manual searches (piano roll, tuner, harmony trials) with precise automated detection.
Specifically, Key Detector helps you compose and arrange faster (chord choices, basslines, melodies), sample cleanly (consistent transposition and time-stretching), and secure pitch processing on a vocal or solo instrument. It is also a very effective ally for all contexts where the key is sometimes ambiguous: very dense music, complex harmonic layers, or content from varied sources.
At the heart of the plugin, the Waves Neural Networks engine analyzes your audio signal and provides a key suggestion within seconds. The result is not limited to a simple estimate: Key Detector displays the root note, the scale type (major or minor), and gives you what you need to make a musical decision quickly, without breaking your creative flow.
The workflow is intentionally minimalist: you insert Key Detector on the track to analyze, start playback, then the plugin first makes an initial suggestion before moving to a verification phase. Once the key is confirmed, you can immediately get back to the essentials: writing, harmonizing, arranging, and producing, without endless testing.
In real life, a recording is not always perfectly tuned, and some samples may be slightly unstable. Key Detector is designed to recognize the key even if the pitch is a bit off, which prevents transposition errors and harmonies that clash for no reason.
For vocal-oriented producers, this is a major time saver: by clicking "Transmit," the detected key can be sent to Waves Tune Real-Time, Waves Tune, Waves Harmony, and OVox. The result: faster pitch correction, harmonies, and vocal effects setup, with immediate consistency between your session and processing. For this function to work, the relevant plugins must be updated to v14.
When a track oscillates between several harmonic interpretations (relative major or minor, implicit tonal center, borrowed chord), Key Detector offers two alternative keys accessible via "Alternative Scales." This is ideal for validating by ear, choosing the most musical harmony, or adapting the key to the goal (for example, a more comfortable vocal range in another scale).
