Waves MondoMod is a modulation plugin designed to transform static sources into animated, expressive, and sometimes completely unrecognizable sounds. It revisits the classic roles of tremolo (amplitude modulation), vibrato (pitch modulation via frequency), and auto-pan, pushing them into creative territories: circular movement, controlled instability, image widening, and lo-fi effects.
In production, it can be used on synths, guitars, keyboards, pads, and effects, as well as on vocals (ad-libs, choirs, ambiances), drums (hi-hats, shakers, room), or effects buses. Whether you're looking for a "sweet" modulation to enrich a chorus or an "insane" modulation for sound design, MondoMod allows you to sculpt the perception of movement and width without multiplying plugins.
The core of MondoMod is the ability to use FM, AM, and rotary panning simultaneously. This approach creates rich, evolving effects: a vibrato can become more edgy thanks to AM, while rotary panning gives a sense of trajectory beyond simple left-right movement. The result: textures that breathe, spin, oscillate, or "float" in the stereo field.
MondoMod lets you pan audio across any range within the stereo field, helping to control the effect: micro-movements to thicken a source, or wider sweeps to create a sense of motion. The 360-degree rotation adds a movement dimension that evokes a source in orbit, useful for placing an element in space, energizing a pad, or making an FX more cinematic.
The modulation speed can reach up to 6 kHz, opening the door to unexpected results: at these frequencies, modulation approaches ring modulation effects and lo-fi sounds, perfect for dirtying a synth, twisting a bassline, creating metallic harmonics, or giving a "broken radio" signature to a sample.
By disabling FM modulation, MondoMod can also be used to add a very tight delay to the processed sound, a handy tool to enhance presence, create slight doubling, or add controlled thickness without tipping into a too-wide chorus.
Beyond extreme effects, MondoMod remains musical: it allows creation of subtle chorusing, doubling, and clean image widening to enlarge a source and make it stand out in an arrangement. This is particularly useful when you want more movement and width while maintaining a coherent mix feel.
