Waves Silk Vocal is a vocal processing plugin designed to speed up mixing lead vocals, backing vocals, and spoken voices. Its intelligent engine analyzes your signal in real time to reduce resonances and balance the spectrum, resulting in a clearer, more stable voice that better integrates with the instrumental. It is suitable for pop, rap, rock, electronic productions as well as podcasts and voice-over work, when you need to quickly transform a "raw" take into a clean, controlled, and broadcast-ready vocal.
Instead of multiplying dynamic EQs and manual cuts, Silk Vocal relies on 2000 analysis bands to detect problematic areas and intervene only when necessary. You maintain control over the amount of processing, while the intelligent engine decides where and when to act, saving time and improving translation across different listening systems.
The Low section tightens overly round lows (proximity effect, room, mic) while preserving warmth. Mid targets the most sensitive vocal range, reducing aggressiveness and harshness while maintaining character. Two automatable handles allow you to precisely target the frequency range for fine adjustment. High offers treatment options depending on the source: Sibilance mode to tame "s", "ch" sounds and overly sharp attacks, or High mode to smooth overly resonant brilliance in the extreme highs.
Once tonal balance is achieved, the Dynamics section adds simple, musical compression to keep the voice upfront, steady, and coherent. The link control applies output gain compensation to avoid unintended level increases during adjustment.
By default, Auto Makeup Gain automatically compensates for the reduction caused by the smart EQ to maintain a stable perceived level. To adapt Silk Vocal to your workflow, you can disable it and manage levels manually. Advanced settings complete the workflow: HPF at 60 Hz to eliminate sub-bass, Speed to adjust processing responsiveness, Precision to choose between a more surgical or smoother action, a Gate to limit noise between phrases, and a global Mix to blend processing in parallel. The Solo and Delta functions are ideal for precisely hearing what is being removed and adjusting confidently, even in imperfect monitoring environments.
Silk Vocal comes with Silk Vocal Live, a real-time version optimized for latency, designed for recording while hearing the "mixed" vocal during tracking, or for live sound situations. It retains the approach and simplicity of the original plugin while adopting a design intended for live use, with SoundGrid compatibility.
