Waves SSL E-Channel is a channel strip plug-in inspired by the Solid State Logic SL 4000E console strips. It is used to quickly process a track (vocals, kick, snare, bass, guitar, keyboards, synths, instrument buses) with the essential tools of a modern mix: equalization, filtering, compression, and gate/expander. The goal is twofold: to achieve an immediate placement in the mix (dynamic control, frequency cleanup, enhancement), while bringing the grain and "console" feel that make sources more coherent and dense.
In both home studio and professional production contexts, SSL E-Channel is used as much for precise corrections (removing unnecessary low end, taming sibilance, controlling an aggressive snare) as for character treatment (sharper attack, increased presence, brighter high frequencies). It is a particularly relevant choice for pop, rap, RnB, and contemporary music productions where consistent punch and clarity are sought track by track.
The SL 4000 series made history by democratizing an approach where each console strip includes not only EQ but also dynamics. Waves SSL E-Channel adopts this principle: you keep centralized control over the parameters that matter, without stacking multiple plug-ins. The result: a faster, more coherent workflow, and more "musical" mixing decisions because everything interacts like on a console.
The model reproduces the original behavior, notably the idea that filters and dynamics remain in the circuit even when settings are neutral. Practically, this fosters a sense of continuity and a slight typical console "glue," useful when instantiating the plug-in on many tracks to unify the mix. The VCA-type gain stage and the channel's operating mode contribute to a perceived dynamic that is smooth yet punchy, ideal for bringing out the attack of a vocal, snare, or bass.
The EQ section offers 4 parametric bands (with two shelf-type stages and two parametric stages) and a pair of filters. The famous "Black Knob" EQ, developed in the early 1980s with producer George Martin, stands out with a bright, straightforward, and "forward" sound. You can choose a shelf response to open the air of a vocal or solidify a low end, or switch to a bell curve when you need finer sculpting (tom resonances, nasality, harshness in the upper midrange).
The soft-knee compressor/limiter provides natural control: perfect for stabilizing vocals, thickening bass, or holding a rhythm guitar. Additionally, the expander/gate reduces bleed, room noise, or enhances drum impact by controlling resonance tails. The placement of the dynamics section before or after filters and EQ opens up very effective mixing strategies: for example, cutting lows before compression to prevent an overly loaded kick from triggering excessive gain reduction, or compressing first then equalizing to reshape the tone after control.
The SSL channel goes further with a flexible internal sidechain: you can route the EQ or filters into the detection path to "tune" the compressor/gate's reaction. This is particularly useful to prevent a frequency range from overly driving compression (boomy lows, aggressive mids), or to make the dynamics respond to a specific band for a cleaner and more stable result.
To speed up work, Waves SSL E-Channel includes over 130 presets designed by renowned engineers and producers (Chris Lord-Alge, Steve Lillywhite, Dave Pensado, Dave Darlington, Joe Barresi, Dave Aron, Thom Russo, and others). They cover a wide variety of sources (vocals, drums, guitars, piano, keys, synths, strings) and provide excellent starting points. The plug-in is also designed to remain CPU efficient, facilitating use on large multitrack sessions without sacrificing responsiveness.
