Waves V-EQ3 is an equalization plugin designed to bring an immediately recognizable analog signature to your tracks and buses, while remaining quick to adjust in any project. It is aimed at producers, mixers, and engineers who want to enhance the presence of a vocal, sculpt acoustic instruments, thicken a bass, or add openness to a mix, with a "musical first" approach typical of vintage console equalizers.
In "in the box" mixing, V-EQ3 is especially useful when you want to push a source forward in the mix, add body without heaviness, or add a bright "air" top end without harshness. It also works very well on subgroups (drums bus, guitar bus, choirs) and as a finishing touch on stems, where a modern EQ might sound too clinical.
The V-EQ3 captures the spirit of historic equalizers where each frequency had a precise sonic purpose. The result: you get a natural and colored sound with very few adjustments, thanks to carefully chosen curves and slopes. The behavior is designed to "hit the mark" quickly, from individual tracks to broader processing.
The mid section offers 10 bell frequencies selected purely for musical reasons. The benefit is twofold: you quickly identify useful areas (attack, intelligibility, presence), and the response remains pleasant even with significant boosts. Handy for adding snap to a snare, clarifying a guitar, or making a vocal more intelligible without harshness.
The low shelves allow you to add body or power, or conversely to refine a source if it clutters the low end. On the high side, the 10 kHz and 12 kHz frequencies serve to add that typical "air": a sparkle that highlights vocals and acoustic instruments while maintaining an analog feel thanks to a touch of harmonic character.
The high-pass filter helps clean up "mud" and control unnecessary low-end energy, particularly useful before sending sources to buses. Phase inversion adds a valuable feature for certain parallel setups or managing combinations of takes and processing where phase coherence becomes critical.
V-EQ3 includes a Class A type circuit modeling and low-distortion behavior, with characteristics associated with transformers. Even if you reset the EQ to zero, the plugin retains this imprint: useful for adding a sense of width and depth at the end of the chain on a track. An effective approach is to insert it as the last insert, flatten the EQ, then activate the analog option to obtain an "in the box" console color.
