Waves WLM Plus Loudness Meter is a loudness measurement plugin designed to ensure your content reaches reliable target levels, regardless of the distribution medium. It is suitable for music productions intended for streaming as well as spoken content (podcasts, voice-overs), YouTube videos, games, and post-production work (commercials, trailers, TV programs). The goal is simple: to provide you with a clear and actionable reading of perceived loudness (LUFS) and true peaks (True Peak), to avoid volume inconsistencies, aggressive normalization, and distortion risks after encoding.
In practice, WLM Plus helps you stabilize the perceived volume of an entire program, compare segments, and validate a delivery that complies with broadcast specifications. It is an essential quality control tool whenever you need to meet standards, document your measurements, or deliver masters ready for publication.
WLM Plus is designed to meet the requirements of platforms and broadcasters, supporting measurement standards ITU-R BS.1770-3, EBU R 128, and ATSC A/85. You can work with recognized benchmarks whether your goal is web, TV, or digital distribution. This approach reduces back-and-forth during validation and ensures consistent level coherence from one piece of content to another.
The plugin displays several time scales to track signal behavior: Momentary for immediate reaction, Short Term for a more musical trend, Integrated for the average over the program duration, as well as True Peak measurement to anticipate real peaks that may cause issues after transcoding. This combination is particularly useful when balancing voice against music, controlling dynamics, or harmonizing a series of episodes.
Depending on your workflow, you can select different measurement methods. The detailed EBU methods provide rigorous readings, while the LM1 protocol allows you to average loudness over an entire program. For spoken content, the DIAL method anchors loudness on dialogue to achieve a more relevant evaluation when voice intelligibility is a priority.
WLM Plus incorporates frequency weighting based on the Fletcher-Munson curve to approximate human perception. You have several weighting options (or none) and pre-filtering tools with customizable high-pass and low-pass filters. This allows you to adapt measurements to the nature of the program, better isolate certain signal behaviors, and refine your control, especially on mixes rich in sub-bass or very dense in highs.
Instead of noticing an overshoot and having to correct elsewhere, you can adjust output directly thanks to the True Peak limiter and gain trim. The limiter uses a recognized limiting technology to contain peaks and reduce distortion risk during encoding, while maintaining precise control over the final level. This is a notable advantage for quickly finalizing a "ready-to-deliver" master.
WLM Plus includes presets to meet common post-production and content creation needs. You can also generate CSV log files to document your measurements and archive results, including simultaneous tracking of the three measurement methods. This is a valuable asset for teams, traceability, and technical validations.
