This delay pedal lives up to the Echoplex name it proudly bears, reproducing the dark, thick, and very musical repeats of the most sought-after tape echo in rock history.
Third of its kind.
Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Brian May, Andy Summers, David Gilmour? The greatest guitar heroes built their sound around the legendary EP-3, the famous transistor Echoplex. This huge box was made from 1970 to 1991, long enough to mark several generations with the hallmark of its tape delay that instantly enhances any tone. The problem is, the EP-3 is bulky, expensive on the vintage market, and has quite variable reliability.
Modern times.
To help you overcome all these obstacles between you and your ideal delay sound, MXR designed the EP103 Echoplex Delay, a compact pedal typical of the brand whose circuit perfectly emulates the character of the old machines, without the usual hassles. Your original sound passes through a high-fidelity signal path to preserve your highs, and the repeats range from 40 to 750 milliseconds, from rockabilly slapback to soaring Pink Floyd-style echoes.
Accelerated aging.
In addition to the three usual controls for delay, feedback (number of repeats), and repeat volume, the EP103 Echoplex Delay also lets you adjust the age of your virtual tape. By default, the sound produced is that of a well-calibrated new tape, with minimal wow and flutter. But you can emulate the unpredictability of a tape that has already seen plenty of use—this time without the risk of it failing you mid-show! All that’s left is to connect an M199 Tap Tempo Switch to control your Echoplex’s tempo with your foot, an option that was, of course, unimaginable on echoes of days gone by.
This delay pedal lives up to the Echoplex name it proudly bears, reproducing the dark, thick, and very musical repeats of the most sought-after tape echo in rock history. The Echoplex Delay delivers the warm, organic sound of the legendary Echoplex EP-3 with delay times up to 750 ms. The Age control lets you shape the repeat sound from clear and bright to progressively degrading. It is possible to add a Tap Tempo pedal allowing up to 4 seconds between repeats, and to use the pedal in stereo.
