In the 1980s, TAMA's Superstars and Imperialstars reigned supreme - the perfect drums for the era. But TAMA's craftsmen and designers wanted something that transcended trends, something timeless—drums that understood a drummer's passion and allowed for expression in all genres, styles, moods, and techniques. They created the Starclassic maple shells... and started the thin shell revolution. And now, the new Exotic Finish line offers beautiful, one-of-a-kind exotic wood exterior finishes for an extra touch of luxury. Numerous options are available to meet the varied and critical needs of professional drummers, including a selection of over 30 different shell sizes. Starclassic Maple also offers a choice of three shell finishes: Black Nickel, Chrome, and Smoked Black Nickel. Starclassic Maple is simply an unparalleled combination of sound and image. The Bearing Edge The shape of the bearing edge is one of the most important factors affecting the sound of a drum. Since drum heads are the main source of vibration, the shape of the contact point between the head and the shell determines and defines the sound. That's why TAMA has worked intensively to achieve the most functional shape for the head and shell edge. The image shows a cross-section of the bearing edge of the shell. As indicated in part A, the angle of the upper edge is fixed at 2.5 mm inside the outer surface of the shell. The edge is cut into a round collar so that it follows the natural shape of the drumhead (B). This design, which creates a better fit between the head and the bearing edge, maximizes the resonance of the drum. This bearing edge shape is part of our TAMA tradition and is essential to providing the unique sound of TAMA drums.

Shells (100% maple)

Lacquer finishes: Tom/Floor tom: 6-ply 5 mm, Bass drum: 8-ply 7 mm
For optimal transfer of vibrations from the head to the shell, it is preferable to opt for a thinner shell. However, less thickness often means less strength. Instead of simply making thinner shells using fewer plies, TAMA reduces each ply and cross-laminates them to create a 6-ply shell that is 5 mm thick (8-ply, 7 mm thick for the bass drum). This combination results in a thinner shell that is actually stronger than other shells of greater thickness. Starclassic shells are made of maple, currently the most popular material due to its warm, clear sound.
