Description
Traditionally, the Tama announced the gathering of men in the public square for urgent information. Mounted with two skins (one that is struck, the other for resonance), the Tama allows for a wide range of sounds. It is shaped like an hourglass, carved from a hollowed wooden block. Placed under the armpit, the skin is struck with a thin curved stick. During play, different pressures on the lacing change the pitch of the sound.
