Dvo?ák's Violin Sonatina originates, like the famous Symphony "From the New World". In the Larghetto, the closeness to the song melodies of the "New World" is so evident that this movement has become known in some arrangements under the title "Indian Canzonetta". Nevertheless, the composer never directly adopted the folk song material he found. The fact that the Sonatina has now become quite popular does not contradict the composer's intentions at all. Dvo?ák wrote to his publisher Simrock: "The Sonatina is intended for the youth (dedicated to my two children), but also adults, grown-ups, should entertain themselves with it as best they can."
