Description

Schumann's last concertante orchestral work was not premiered until 1937. This new edition presents for the first time a careful urtext of the score as well as the composer's piano reduction, from which Clara Schumann and Joseph Joachim performed. Long overlooked between Beethoven and Brahms, Schumann's last concertante orchestral work was only premiered in 1937 and simultaneously published in an editorially inadequate edition. It was not until the 1980s that a reassessment of Schumann's late works began, as a result of which the missing link between the concertos of Beethoven and Brahms (Yehudi Menuhin) came back into focus. Since then, it has been regarded as a hidden gem with special musical and technical challenges for performers and listeners. With the new edition of perhaps the most underrated masterpiece of the Romantic era, a careful urtext of the score is now available for the first time. Even more astonishing: for the first time, the composer's piano reduction is published, from which Clara Schumann and Joseph Joachim performed. Thomas Zehetmair, who has significantly contributed to the reassessment of the concerto as a performer, took over the technical preparation of the solo part.
