If you spend ten minutes on any random radio station anywhere in the world, the likelihood of picking up one of Hugh Padgham's productions is surprisingly high. From the most iconic songs by Phil Collins, Genesis, The Police, and Sting to landmark tracks by Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, The Human League, Paul Young, Melissa Etheridge, and Paul McCartney, Hugh contributed to it all. Not only did he contribute to the sonic creation of timeless tracks, but he also single-handedly pioneered the sound of an era. Ever wondered who the mastermind was behind the iconic gated reverb snare drum? It was Hugh. Or who the engineers who pioneered the fusion of acoustic and electronic drums were? Hugh was undoubtedly one of them. Needless to say, his mark on music history, particularly when it comes to rethinking the role of drums in a production, couldn't be more evident.
For this SDX, Hugh wanted to create a comprehensive source of acoustic and electronic drums, inspired not only by the 80s and 90s, but also designed to reflect some of the most famous drummers and landmark albums in his oeuvre. In total, six unique acoustic kits were selected, alongside an impressive collection of classic vintage drum machines, all captured in the breathtaking ambience of the pristine sonic wonder of British Grove Studios in London, UK. For an even more organic and period-accurate feel, all the drums and drum machines were recorded to magnetic tape before being digitally converted. Additionally, the machines were amplified through a PA system in the same ambience as the acoustic drums and captured with a similar microphone setup. This gives you an impressive canvas of acoustic and electronic sounds that you can seamlessly mix, blend, match, and surgically tweak using Superior Drummer 3's extensive built-in design tools. Of course, if you want Hugh's mixes right from the start, a wealth of his custom presets are included.
