The French horn player Henri Chaussier was initially a fervent advocate of the natural horn (or simple horn), but after a trip to Germany where he had to play the piston horn, noticing the difficulties due to the instrument's playability, he came up with the idea of a non-transposing horn. Partnering with the wind instrument maker François Millereau, he developed an omniphonic horn at the end of the 1880s. Camille Saint-Saëns enabled him to highlight the specificities of his omniphonic instrument by composing the Morceau de concert, opus 94, for him. This edition is part of the "French Music" collection, designed for students, teachers, and professional performers; it offers a historical introduction by Edmond Lemaître and performance notes by Daniel Catalanotti. The full score of the version with piano provides a writing of the horn in actual pitches, while the separate part is intended for a transposing horn in F.
