The AEA R88A has been optimized for recording stereo instruments and ensembles. The R88's two ribbon motors are oriented at 90 degrees, and provide excellent off-axis response. The R88A uses the large ribbon configuration of the RCA 44 pickup line, giving the mic a solid bass response down to 20Hz and extreme smoothness in the high frequencies, very flattering for complex tones like cymbals, strings and woodwinds.
The R88A is very useful in chamber music, drum overheads, stereo piano covers, brass sections and coincidence stereo applications. The very high quality of the R88's passive electronics guarantees a high dynamic range with minimal distortion. The transformer's additional 12 dB of gain is beneficial when recording sources such as vocals or soft acoustic guitars. Active impedance helps prevent sound interference on long cable runs or when used near large lighting fixtures. The R88A requires standard 48V phantom power to operate.
The R88A offers minimal wind noise protection to ensure it sounds as natural as possible — so be sure to use a pop filter when taking close-up vocals. The R88 can be used with Blumlein and M-S stereo jack techniques. The finish is matte black to improve its discretion, in Live shots. It is equipped with an integrated suspension to reduce noise transmitted by the microphone stand.
