Description

Performance Objective
Studios primarily use large-format 2- and 3-way monitors designed to represent a broad, high-level listening reference. That said, in this new era of high-definition audio, it remains essential to listen to your mix on a low-frequency-limited system, such as a television, radio, computer, car stereo, iPod dock, etc. It's important to make mixing decisions by analyzing the mix with monitors that don't generate any distortion caused by filters or with limited bandwidth. It's important to pay particular attention to the midrange frequencies of vocals/guitar/keyboards. This is where unfiltered, full-range monitoring becomes very useful. Ten months of research and development, comparative listening, and modifications led to the design of the AVANTONE MixCubes. The result is a very smooth sound, with the benefit of full-range reproduction, compared to the original 5C Sound Cubes. Listening tests reveal that the MixCubes offer a smooth, more open, transparent high-end response with extended bass response, while retaining their original basic character.

Monitor Design
The initial 5C Sound Cubes™ were made of 12mm particleboard with a woodgrain finish. We decided to upgrade to thicker, denser medium-density panels, which offer superior rigidity and low resonances. We started with a 165mm enclosed cube with rounded corners. We then opted for a stylish high-gloss “RETRO-CREAM” polyurethane finish. The initial monitors were equipped with screws, or later, plastic terminal blocks mounted on a recessed circular plate. We decided to upgrade to high-end, machined, nickel-plated solid terminal blocks (dual-banana format) mounted on a milled and silk-screened black anodized aluminum plate. We then added a 7mm neoprene support base under the baffle to serve as a non-slip surface and acoustic isolator. Additionally, to accommodate more complex installations, we integrated a standard 5/8" threaded microphone socket under the base.

Speaker Design
The original speakers were basic 5" (127mm) stamped basket drivers. We designed our own 5.25" (133mm) cast aluminum basket and basket/cone assembly to enhance the performance of the original drivers. The basket mounting ring is then polished to give it a tasteful aesthetic. The paper cone, selected for its musical characteristics, was entirely designed and manufactured from the finest New Zealand wood pulp with the addition of mica fibers to reduce weight and increase rigidity. The fabric surround is manufactured in Japan to exacting tolerances. The top plate and driver T-joint are made of Sumitomo 1008 low-carbon steel, which provides the highest magnetic flux for voice coil movement. The magnets are Y-40 grade (machining specifications), and provide a high-power, low-distortion magnetic motor weighing 1,200 grams.

Amplifier Design
We have completely designed the amplifier module to achieve truly professional performance. We have far exceeded the strictest quality criteria in the selection of components, ensuring their electrical performance and long-term reliability. The result is a "no-compromise" amplifier with exceptional headroom characteristics that rival the performance of studio rack amplifiers sold for much more.
