Borys Lyatoshynsky's Slavic Concerto is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of Ukrainian classical music. The uniqueness of this work lies in being entirely based on the melodies or folk motifs of Ukraine and its neighboring countries. Written in the tradition of the great concertos of the 19th and early 20th centuries, this work is very personal and perfectly faithful to the composer's style and aesthetics due to its discoveries and boldness. The piano writing, very virtuosic despite sometimes fierce difficulty, does not lack intimacy, richness, and refinement. The intertwined dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra within an overall dramatic discourse creates a true symphonic tableau.
