Caught between the famous Symphonies n ° 7 and n ° 9, the relatively short 8th Symphony still has a special status today. Already after its creation in February 1814, a critic reported that it had not unleashed "keine Furore", no fury. At first glance, it returns to already outdated forms and genres, even going so far as to reintroduce, after an Allegretto scherzoso, a Minuet again (and not a slow movement) in third place. But Beethoven measured himself intensely against the history of music, broke traditional behaviors and models and came up with surprising new solutions, which made the Eighth an essential milestone in the history of the symphony. Based on the musical text of the complete edition of Beethoven's works and accompanied by a new preface, this very recent edition reports on the current state of Beethoven research. With this study edition, this text is now accessible to everyone at low cost and in a handy format.
